International Newspapers about coup in Myanmar

In the November 2020 parliamentary election, Suu Kyi's NLD party achieved an absolute majority, according to official figures, with turnout reportedly exceeding 70 percent. The European Union viewed the election as free and fair, despite structural democratic deficits. The army, on the other hand, for which a quarter of the seats in the parliamentary chambers are automatically reserved, spoke of electoral fraud. On the morning of February 1, 2021, the military under Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing launched a coup after continued criticism of the election results. Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other high-ranking NLD members were arrested. The military also declared a state of emergency. Military television announced it would take control for a year. The action was justified by alleged election fraud.

Important: every crime must be prosecuted.  And a lot of crime is happening in Myanmar.  At some point a court will decide.  The court needs evidence.  So: who, when, where, how and what.  Each of you should secure this evidence.  Photos, witnesses, names, places (GPS).  And keep everything centrally and securely.  Maybe you know someone who organizes that.  Here we go.  In my job I learned that crimes must be punished.

In the fight against the terrorist regime, the following app can be useful. Sometimes it is necessary to give a very precise location. Google Maps may be too inaccurate for that. The app what3words has divided the world into 3x3 square meters and assigned three words for each square. This makes it possible to determine the location very accurately - even in rough terrain. Letter of the President of the German Bundestag

His Excellency
T Khun Myatt
Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw
of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar

Members of the
Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw
YANGON
Myanmar

Berlin, 26 February 2021

Dear Colleague,
Dear elected Members,

I have been following the current developments in your country with great concern. I condemn the military coup and the associated arrests of democratically elected members of Parliament in the strongest possible terms. On behalf of the German Bundestag, I assure my sincerely felt sympathy and my solidarity to you and to all parliamentarians suffering under repression in Myanmar, not least in light of the intensive bilateral relations between our two parliaments in recent years.

It is my profound hope that the international community’s appeals to the military leadership in Myanmar, which has unlawfully put an abrupt end to the democratic change in your country, fall on fertile ground. The state of emergency must be lifted, arrested members of Parliament and the former government must be released immediately and democratic structures reinstated. The democratic legitimacy of the parliamentarians elected in November 2020 is reflected in the protests currently underway among the population, which are being violently crushed. The welfare of your country and its population must no longer be placed in jeopardy.

I wish you all the strength, health and energy necessary to withstand your current plight and to overcome this predicament with the intention of restoring democracy, fundamental and human rights, freedom of speech and the rule of law to Myanmar.

Yours sincerely,

Sgd. Dr Wolfgang Schäuble,
President of the German Bundestag

On the night of February 16, 2021, there were several Myanmar Airline (MAI) flights between Kunming, China and Yangon. Among others, with the flight number MMA791. These were passenger aircraft. There are usually no flights from Yangon at night, nor are there any direct flights from Yangon to Kunming and back, according to MAI's flight schedule. One of the planes parked about 200 from the terminal after arriving at Yangon Int. Airport and flew back to Kunming after about 45 minutes at about 01:19. There is little likelihood that these were passenger flights. An inquiry to MAI is unanswered so far.

February, 15.2021

Also today (16.02.) there are again several flights between Yangon and Kunming. Among others flight MMA768 [apparently with wrongly indicated new destination: Lincang/China] (Airbus A320) and MMA770 (Airbus A319) shortly after each other. At about 23:50 h, the Airbus A319 with the identification MMA771 is at the Kunming Airport terminal. At about 23:30 h local time (altitude Lashio), two aircraft (MMA769 and MMA771) are en route from Kunming to Yangon only a short distance behind each other.

According to the flight schedules of Yangon Intl. Airport there are no passenger flights from Yangon to Kunming. On Feb. 16, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Berlin was contacted for comment. Also the Embassy of Myanmar in Berlin. There has been no reply so far. Also a request to Myanmar Airlines remained unanswered so far.

Press Release:

In response to their concerns, the Foreign Ministry issued a press release on February 6, 2021 on the current situation in Myanmar.  The Union Foreign Minister and Union International Cooperation Minister also briefed Yangon-based diplomats on the latest developments in Myanmar via video conference on February 5, 2021. They must objectively observe the evolving developments that forced the Tatmadaw (armed forces) to do so  have to assume state responsibility in accordance with the state constitution.  The Ministry would like to reiterate that the State Administrative Council (SAC) will continue to comply with the provisions of the state constitution and is determined to practice the real and disciplinary multiparty democracy that corresponds to the current situation in the country.  Upon completion of the assigned tasks in accordance with the provisions of state emergency, the free and fair general elections are held and the responsibility of the state in the election is transferred to the victorious political party.  During the implementation of the tasks set out in the constitutional provisions during the state of emergency, the SAC makes every effort to ensure peace, stability, unity and socio-economic development of the country and its people.  Despite the illegal demonstrations, incitement to riot and violence, the authorities concerned are exercising extreme restraint through minimal use of force to clear the disruption and uphold the rule of law and public safety in accordance with national law and international practice.  The Ministry believes that some statements and remarks made by some embassies in Yangon and abroad amount to obvious interference in the internal affairs of Myanmar.  Their statements and remarks also violated Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, according to which diplomats should respect the laws and regulations of the receiving state and not interfere in the internal affairs of that state.  In this regard, the diplomatic missions in Myanmar should strictly adhere to the principles and norms set out in the Vienna Convention and the Charter of the United Nations.

The protests against the coup in Myanmar are becoming increasingly bloody. Now police officers have once again fired live ammunition at demonstrators. Several people were killed in the process.

Policemen stop an ambulance and force the medics outside. Once they sit by the side of the road the police start savagely beating the defenseless medics.

Myanmar authorities have charged Thein Zaw (Associated Press) and five other members of the media with violating a public order law that could see them imprisoned for up to three years. The arrest happened as police charged toward protesters gathered at the Hledan Center intersection, which has become a meeting point for demonstrators who then continue protesting elsewhere in the city. He remained detained Sunday and was believed to be in Yangon’s infamous Insein Prison.
